Sharing the Transformative Impact of this Chess Workshop Series on One Person's Life

One such person who attended the series and experienced the profound impact of this workshop was Jai. An elementary school boy, Jai had always loved chess but never imagined he could be coached by and play with confidence with a Chess Olympiad participant. That all changed when he began to take part in The Dawson Chess Academy's workshop series by David Dawson at the Milford Public Library last Summer. After completing that series for beginners and getting a great foundation on the game, he not only gained a better understanding of the game but also improved his critical thinking and problem-solving skills. His mother reported, "We truly loved the chess workshop and learned so much! David made it exciting and fun and informative!" She went further to say, "We have been playing chess as a family and we find ourselves remembering so much of what we learned when we are playing now!" She described a chess game in which Jai said to his opponent, "You're not developing your chess pieces enough..." as he proceeded to win the game against a more experienced player. Jai shows such enthusiasm at school, started to look forward to challenging himself even more mentally through chess, and joined the after-school chess program in the Fall. His passion has even inspired him to enroll in the Spring After-School Chess program as he continues sharing his love of the game with others. Through David's teaching and guidance, Jai is on a path to reaching his fullest potential in Chess and in life.

Capturing the Fun and Excitement: Photo Highlights from the Workshop Series

The workshop series is a truly rewarding experience for the families who attended so far. The photos from the workshops show that everyone involved had loads of fun playing chess, learning new strategies and tips, and engaging with each other. It's amazing to see these moments captured on camera, because we can recognize how much progress our children have made right away! Thanks to David, the Milford Public Library, and Friends of the Milford Library, parents at the workshop got to witness their children make moves with confidence, and learn how to trade weak pieces for their opponent’s strong pieces, how to set up a battery on an open file or diagonal, how to attack with a pawn storm, attack a King with a Rook lift as they grew more knowledgeable about the game. These special moments were shared among family members and friends and will be treasured for years to come.

Unlock the Secrets of Chess: Tips for Beginners

If you are interested in learning more about chess, here are a few tips for beginners. Firstly, start by taking an assessment from a professional to get an idea of where you currently stand in terms of your skill level. Like one of our chess workshop attendees, Maurizio from Milford, Connecticut said, "I've known how to play chess for so long, without knowing how to play chess for so long, so this has been great to have all the little strategies. One time I might actually beat this guy [son], so we'll see. This guy here is pretty tough. Thank you for everything...” The assessment at The Dawson Chess Academy may include a questionnaire(s), in-person over-the-board play, observation, and testing. This way, you'll be able to set realistic goals and move forward at the pace that's best for you.

Once you have your assessment results, a qualified professional such as your chess coach would usually be able to make a recommendation as to how you may proceed to optimize your results. Parents of children who are beginners often ask, “How often should I have chess lessons?” Once a week is recommended. 2-4 times a month minimum. It's also recommended that in addition, you allocate time between sessions to play some slow games. In addition, it's also useful to work with your chess coach on specific aspects of your game in addition to detailed game analysis. Make sure to practice regularly with different opponents so you can test your skills and gain experience playing against different types of players.

Finally, one of the questions we get most from beginners is, “How much time will it take to learn to play Chess?” Research says that one to two years of practicing can be enough to build a good foundation and consider yourself an excellent chess player. To get from a beginner to an average level (no rating to ~1400 elo/FIDE/USCF rating), depending on all the various factors, it could take as little as 6 months to as long as two and a half years. That’s why the one-on-one chess coaching, group chess coaching, chess workshops, and after-school chess programs The Dawson Chess Academy in Milford, Connecticut provides range from 6 months to 2 and a half years, and are customized for beginners, intermediate chess players, experts, and masters. Don't get discouraged if it takes time to master the game, because chess is one of those pursuits that requires patience and dedication! With these simple tips in mind, we hope that you will find success on your journey to discovering how fun playing chess can be!

Chess Workshop at Milford Public Library by Chess Olympiad participant and Chess Coach David Dawson
By Julianna Dawson 19 Feb, 2023
Milford, CT resident, Chess Olympiad participant, and Chess Coach David Dawson, in his Chess for Success in Your Life LIVE Workshop Series focus on Middle Game at the Milford Public Library on February 15th, took twenty parents and children through experiencing how to attack with a pawn storm, how to trade weak pieces for your opponent's strong pieces, how to set up a battery on an open file, and on a diagonal and how to attack a King with a Rook lift. It was fun to watch families make moves with the knowledge they came in with, learn new strategies, then observe them begin to utilize new knowledge on the chess board. Seeing the transition happen LIVE in the room as the children shared strategies they came up with in the group was priceless. This event is one of three events at The Milford Public Library in Connecticut. The series is designed to teach children, parents, and their caregivers how to play chess.
