Spotlight on The Dawson Chess Academy: Featured in Milford Living

Julianna Gibson-Dawson • December 21, 2024

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news—Milford Living magazine has featured The Dawson Chess Academy in their Winter 2025 issue!

The article highlights the incredible chess community growing right here in Milford and shines a spotlight on our academy’s mission to make chess accessible to parents and families who might be curious about chess for their children, but unsure where to begin.

Some people often find chess to be a complex and strategic game. At The Dawson Chess Academy, we’re dedicated to creating a welcoming and family-friendly learning environment, and as Milford Living describes, we bring a diverse toolkit of teaching methods to meet the unique needs of every student. Whether it’s in-person group chess coaching sessions at the Margaret Egan Recreation Center, chess workshops at the Milford Public Library, one-on-one in-person or virtual chess coaching sessions, or our after-school chess programs at local schools, we are passionate about sharing chess with our community.

David’s global chess experience—from playing and competing in tournaments in countries around the world, including Dubai and Russia, to name a few—has been instrumental in our chess coaching approach. Paired with Julianna’s entrepreneurial spirit, our teamwork allows us to connect with students and families in ways that foster learning, growth, and fun.

Chess isn’t just a game; it’s a tool for life. As Julianna shares in the article, “We believe life can also be viewed through a strategic lens.” By learning the game, players develop problem-solving skills, strategic thinking, and cognitive abilities that positively impact their lives far beyond the chessboard.

If you’ve ever thought about introducing a child or grandchild to the game of chess, about learning yourself or introducing your family to the game, we’d love to meet you!

  • Join us for group chess coaching on Monday evenings at 6:00 pm at the Margaret Egan Recreation Center by registering on their Website here.

Thank you to Milford Living magazine for highlighting our work and helping us share our love of chess with Milford residents. We’re honored to be part of such an inspiring community and look forward to helping more parents experience the joy and benefits of chess for their children—and maybe even for themselves and their entire family!

Chess Workshop at Milford Public Library by Chess Olympiad participant and Chess Coach David Dawson
By Julianna Dawson February 19, 2023
Milford, CT resident, Chess Olympiad participant, and Chess Coach David Dawson, in his Chess for Success in Your Life LIVE Workshop Series focus on Middle Game at the Milford Public Library on February 15th, took twenty parents and children through experiencing how to attack with a pawn storm, how to trade weak pieces for your opponent's strong pieces, how to set up a battery on an open file, and on a diagonal and how to attack a King with a Rook lift. It was fun to watch families make moves with the knowledge they came in with, learn new strategies, then observe them begin to utilize new knowledge on the chess board. Seeing the transition happen LIVE in the room as the children shared strategies they came up with in the group was priceless. This event is one of three events at The Milford Public Library in Connecticut. The series is designed to teach children, parents, and their caregivers how to play chess.
